How do I know if counselling is right for me?

Exploring your difficulties with a professional counsellor in a confidential space can make a difference to the way you feel. Counselling provides time for you to talk about problems that may be distressing or difficult for you. Only you can decide whether this may be helpful to you.

What causes emotional distress?

There are many factors that cause people distress, it may be childhood issues, bereavement, relationship problems and so much more. Most people will experience emotional pain and difficulties at some time in their lives.

What happens if you can’t help me?

Occasionally I will refer clients on to other professionals, who are more suited to meet your needs. For example, another counsellor or a GP, this will be discussed with you.

Do many people feel so upset that they need counselling?

It is extremely common for people to suffer emotional distress in their lives, in fact in 2013 some 615 million people worldwide suffered from depression and anxiety.

How many sessions will I need?

When we meet for the first time, we can discuss your situation and then decide what is best for you in terms of sessions. Normally we would agree a few sessions to start with, and we can then review this and work on an open-ended basis, or agree another set number of sessions going forward. The aim of counselling is ultimately for it to end.
